Beginning in 2017, non-profit organizations with a calendar year end will be able to file an automatic six-month extension for their IRS Form 990 which is due on May 15, 2017. The IRS extended the previous automatic three-month extension to six-months. For more important due dates please click here.
The change is as a result of the “Surface Transportation and Veteran’s Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015” which modified several tax return due date filings, including the Form 990. The six-month extension will eliminate the previous IRS requirements of non-profit organizations which was to file an automatic three-month extension and request an additional three-month extension based on reasonable cause, if necessary.
